The Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines, IA was the spot for Men’s Professional and Amateur Muay Thai and International Rules action. Pam and Pete Peterson searched the Midwest to bring ready, willing and able fighters from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas to display their talents in front of a knowledgeable crowd that was hungry for fight action and they were not disappointed. The results of the night…
BOUT# 1 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Light Cruiserweight
Able Mahaffey, 3-5-0, Team
RoundKick, Pleasant Hill, IA, Trainer: Pete Peterson
vs
Joe Foley, 1-0-0, Minnesota Kali Group, Minneapolis, MN, Trainer: Diana
Rathborne
Round 1
The fight starts with
both fighters exchanging leg kicks. Mahaffey follows up with a series of body
punches that back Foley up. Mahaffey moves forward, ties Foley up, Foley
pushes off and tries to keep Mahaffey at a distance. Much of the round was a
feeling out round for both fighters. Each attempting kicking and/or punching
combinations to see what will work best on the other but neither establishing
any dominance. In the clinch they would exchange knees and body shots.
Mahaffey was the more aggressive in the round throwing straighter techniques
compared to wilder shots thrown by Foley. A very clean round; Referee Terri
Storm didn’t have to step in and separate the fighters once. The edge in the
round went to Mahaffey on two of the three judge’s scorecards.
Round 2
Foley begins the round with two sharp punches to Mahaffey’s head. Mahaffey
walks through them and lands a couple of punches to the head and knees to the
body. Foley appears to be the more aggressive while trying more knee shots to
Mahaffey’s body. Mahaffey is able to block some of the knee strikes. He
steps back and delivers a front kick to Foley’s body that got a rise out of
the crowd. Foley moves forward delivering leg kicks and body punches in a
very close and again a very clean round with the edge in the round going to
Foley on two of the three judge’s scorecards.
Round 3
Foley starts with a front kick to Mahaffey’s body and then eats two punches to
his head from Mahaffey. Mahaffey throws a leg kick at Foley followed by a
strong punch to the body that misses and causes Mahaffey to slip and fall.
After Referee Terri Storm stands him, Foley comes forward with six or seven
unanswered blows to Mahaffey’s head. Mahaffey clinches to stop him. They
break and then exchange a pair of leg kicks with no apparent effect on either
fighter. Again, Foley charges in with a series of unanswered blows to
Mahaffey’s head. Mahaffey clinches again to stop him. They break and move to
the middle of the ring where both fighters are showing fatigue now. They
exchange a couple more blows as the final bell rings sending the decision to
the judges. The judges score the fight 27-30, 29-28 and 28-29.
Winner by Split Decision—Joe Foley
BOUT# 2 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Light Welterweight
Anthony Baccam, 1-0-0, Iowa State
Muay Thai Club, Ames, IA, Trainer: Dan Koong
vs
Rocky Gabriel, 0-2-0, Red Dragon Fight Club, Norwalk, IA, Trainer: Jerry
Schroeder
Round 1
Gabriel begins with leg kicks. Baccam comes forward and wraps his arms around
the head of Gabriel and begins an onslaught of left/right knees to the body of
Gabriel. Gabriel blocks many of the knees but the attack is non-stop and all
of Gabriel’s energy is devoted to blocking the knee attack. Gabriel backs
Baccam to the ropes but Baccam will not let go of his head and he will not
stop with the knee attack. Baccam threw very few punches in the round after
the initial exchange. The edge in the round went to Baccam on all cards.
Round 2
Round starts with an exchange of kicks exclusively, no punches thrown until
Baccam is close enough to get his arms around Gabriel’s head again where he
begins another knee attack to Gabriel’s body. Gabriel tries to counter with
punches to Baccam’s body but with little effect since the knee shots to
Gabriel’s body take a lot of energy from him. The round ends much like the
last round with Gabriel trying to stop the knee attack to his body. The edge
in the round went to Baccam on all judge’s cards.
Round 3
Gabriel attempts to establish some dominance in the round by coming at Baccam.
Baccam allows Gabriel to get close enough to wrap his arms around Gabriel’s
neck and again work his knees. This round Baccam concentrates on striking
Gabriel’s thighs. The knees to the legs were more difficult to block then
those to the body. Baccam pushes Gabriel back and delivers a right punch to
the head of Gabriel that appeared to stun Gabriel but Baccam failed to follow
up on it and let Gabriel off the hook. The round ended with Gabriel trying to
finish strong but it was too little too late. All judges scored the fight
30-27.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Anthony Baccam
BOUT# 3 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Light Heavyweight
Clayton Skidmore, 5-2-0, Team
RoundKick, Des Moines, IA, Trainer: Pete Peterson/Ryan Clark
vs
Julian Dedeaux, 0-1-0, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Wichita, KS, Trainer: Andy
Zerger
Skidmore comes across the ring and throws a couple of kicks to Dedeaux’s body followed by a knee to the body. Dedeaux grabs on and holds Skidmore, pinning him in the corner to stop the attack. After the referee breaks them, Skidmore again kicks Dedeaux to the legs, body and then the head of Dedeaux forcing Dedeaux to tie Skidmore up again. Dedeaux throws a round kick to Skidmore’s head that was blocked but followed up with punches to the head and body. Skidmore ties up this time and Dedeaux throws a knee to the groin of Skidmore forcing Referee Terri Storm to stop time for Skidmore to recover. During the injury time out, Dedeaux complains to the referee about an injury to his own wrist. The doctor is called to the ring to examine the wrist. The doctor and fighter determine that Dedeaux is able to continue as is Skidmore by this time so the fight continues. Dedeaux throws a front kick to Skidmore’s body, Skidmore grabs Dedeaux around the head and begins throwing knees to Dedeaux’s body. As the round ends, Skidmore works Dedeaux’s body with knees as Dedeaux attempts to block. Dedeaux is unable to answer the bell to start round two. As a result of an injury stoppage, the referee collected the scorecards for the winner of the fight to be determined by who won the first round. All judges scored the round 10-9.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Clayton Skidmore
BOUT# 4 Amateur International Rules, Super Middleweight
Jeff Cunningham, 2-3-0, Team
RoundKick, Urbandale, IA, Trainer: Pete Peterson
vs
Andrew Dostal, 1-0-0, Iowa State Muay Thai Club, Ames, IA, Trainer: Dan Koong
Round 1
Dostal throws some kicks at Cunningham but Cunningham, unhurt, moves forward
and lands a couple of strong punches on Dostal. Dostal strikes Cunningham
again but Cunningham answers with a flurry of punches to Dostal’s head and
bloodies Dostal’s nose. They exchange punches to the head which Cunningham
appears to be more effective. Cunningham throws a kick to Dostal’s body
followed up by a punch to the head. Cunningham the stronger of the two
fighters, appears unhurt by anything Dostal throws and seems willing to take
the blows from Dostal to dish out punishment of his own. Cunningham finishes
the round by stalking Dostal until the bell rings. The edge in the round went
to Cunningham on all judge’s cards.
Round 2
Dostal comes across the ring, nose still bleeding, throws punches to
Cunningham’s head. Cunningham, unhurt, throws kicks to Dostal’s body. Dostal
throws flurries of punches at Cunningham but doesn’t seem to hurt Cunningham.
Cunningham pushes forward but not as busy with the attack as Dostal is with
his counter punches moving backwards. Cunningham appears to believe he can
win the fight with a big shot and is willing to take blows from Dostal in an
attempt to deliver the shot that doesn’t happen. Dostal stays busy impressing
the judges and the crowd. This was a much better round for Dostal. The edge
in the round going to Dostal on all judge’s scorecards.
Round 3
Dostal comes across with a couple of body shots to Cunningham. Cunningham
wades through the punches and tries to hammer the head of Dostal with
punches. Dostal rallies back with a flurry of unanswered punches that back
Cunningham up against the ropes. Both fighters fatigued, Cunningham trying to
end it with the big shot but Dostal answering with flurries. Dostal presses
the attack against a Cunningham who may believe he has the fight won. Dostal
staying busy, refuse to concede a victory to Cunningham. He continues to hit
Cunningham with flurries. Although Cunningham does not appear to be hurt by
many of the blows, he fails to answer back with serious attacks of his own.
As the bell rings to end the fight, Dostal tries to steal the fight with a
flurry of punches as a tired Cunningham is leaning against the ropes. In a
close fight, the judges scored the fight 29-28, 28-29 and 28-29.
Winner by Split Decision—Andrew Dostal
BOUT# 5 Professional
Muay Thai Rules, Super Heavyweight
Razak Al-Hassan, 0-0-0, Team Revolution, Des Moines, IA, Trainer: Chuck
Grigsby
vs
Johnny McKibben, 0-0-0, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Wichita, KS, Trainer: Andy
Zerger
This fight did not happen. After multiple attempts to find a set of gloves for the fighters to wear, (allegedly, even his own gloves didn’t fit), Razak Al-Hassan pulled out of the fight leaving Johnny McKibben, who came to fight, without an opponent. What effect this “no fight” will have on the records of the fighters will be determined by the Thai Boxing Association-Sanctioning Authority.
BOUT# 6 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Heavyweight
Ben Hughes, 2-2-0, Mid America
Martial Arts, Omaha, NE, Trainer: Aaron Cerrone
vs
Jay Ray, 1-1-0, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Wichita, KS, Trainer: Andy Zerger
Round 1
Hughes, a south paw, throws a right jab to Ray’s head and a kick to Ray’s
body. Ray answers with a kick to Hughes’ leg where upon Hughes responds with
a kick to Ray’s head. Hughes throws some punching combinations to Ray’s head
that were blocked. Hughes, the more aggressive throws several more punches
and kicks to the body and head of Ray. Ray attempts to throw counters at
Hughes but with little effect. The edge in the round went to Hughes on all
cards.
Round 2
Hughes comes toward Ray, Ray backs up. Ray throws a leg kick at Hughes and
Hughes answers with a couple punches to Ray’s head followed by leg kicks of
his own on Ray. Hughes throws strong kicks to Ray’s body bending Ray over.
Hughes grabs Ray around the head and throws several vicious knees to Ray’s
body. Neither fighter fights in flurries but Hughes controls the round with
punch/kick combinations and then steps back to see what Ray will do. Ray
seems content to rest between the Hughes’ combinations. Just before the bell
rings to end the round, Hughes throws a right leg round kick to Ray’s head.
The edge in the round went to Hughes on all cards.
Round 3
Hughes begins with leg kicks, side kicks to the body and round kicks to the
head of Ray. Hughes throws many strong kicks at Ray. Ray is able to block
the majority of kicks but Hughes is still getting his attention. Hughes
attempts a flying knee to Ray’s body which Ray is able to avoid but Hughes
remains the stronger and the busier of the two. Ray seems content to get
through the round. All judges score the fight 30-27.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Ben Hughes
BOUT# 7 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Heavyweight
Alex Wells, 1-0-0, Team
RoundKick, Pleasant Hill, IA, Trainer: Able Mahaffey
vs
Ty Campos, 0-1-0, Minnesota Kali Group, Minneapolis, MN, Trainer: Diana
Rathborne
Round 1
Campos comes across the ring with a leg kick and several punches while Wells
answers with some punches of his own forcing Campos to tie him up. They
exchange knees, and some wild punches then break. Campos throws another leg
kick and Wells answers with a flurry of punches to Campos’ head causing Campos
to tie him up again. Another exchange of knees, Wells pushes off and begins
the punches to Campos’ head. Wells’ left/right combinations to the head of
Campos backed Campos up or forced him to tie Wells up throughout most of the
round. The edge in the round went to Wells on all cards.
Round 2
Campos starts with a leg kick which is answered by Wells with four punches to
Campos’ head. Again Campos ties Wells up and throws a couple of knees.
Wells, the taller fighter, is able to push Campos off and continue the
punching combinations to Campos’ head. This was a little better round for
Campos. Nearly every exchange began with Campos throwing a leg kick and Wells
following with punching combinations to Campos’ head. The edge in the round
went to Wells on two of the three scorecards.
Round 3
Campos trying to lean on Wells in this round and fight on the inside. Wells
still able to throw the greater number of blows in the round but toward the
end of the round it turned out to be two very tired fighters leaning on each
other. The edge in the round went to Wells on all cards.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Alex Wells
BOUT# 8 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Lightweight
Dan Koong, 0-2-0, Iowa State
Muay Thai Club, Ames, IA Trainer: Self
vs
Cody Moberly, 2-1-0, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Wichita, KS, Trainer: Andy
Zerger
Round
1
Both fighters exchange kicks, tie up and exchange knees in the clinch.
Moberly throws the first visible elbow to the body of the night. They roll
around the ropes a while and Referee Carl Duncan breaks them. Another
exchange of kicks and then Koong throws a kick at Moberly, who catches the leg
and punches Koong. Koong clinches and they exchange more knees in the
clinch. A close round but the edge went to Moberly on all cards.
Round 2
Moberly throws leg kicks to the body and punches to the head. In the clinch
they exchange knees. When they’re separated, Moberly begins to back Koong
across the ring with kicks to the legs, body and head which again forces Koong
to clinch. Moberly has the edge on the outside, inside the clinch, Koong
appears to be the stronger fighter by working the knees better. The round
went back and forth with both fighters trying to work the round where they’re
stronger. The edge in the round went to Moberly on two of the three judge’s
cards.
Round 3
Moberly begins with two left jabs and a right hook to the head of Koong. He
wraps his arms around Koong and throws Koong to the ground and receives a
warning from Referee Carl Duncan for attempting a kick at Koong while he was
down. Both fighters up again with Moberly still the more effective outside
fighter and Koong still with the edge in the clinch making this a very tough
fight to score. Both fighters are tiring as Moberly tries to maintain the
more aggressive attitude between the two fighters when the bell rings to end
the round. The edge in the round went to Moberly on two of the three judge’s
card. The judges scored the fight 27-30, 29-28 and 27-30.
Winner by Split Decision—Cody Moberly
BOUT# 9 Amateur Muay
Thai Rules, Lightweight
Shawn Ellis, 2-2-0, Red Dragon Fight Club, Norwalk, IA, Trainer: Jerry
Schroeder
vs
Alex Nguyen, 0-1-0, Janjira Muay Thai Kansas, Wichita, KS, Trainer: Andy
Zerger
Round 1
Ellis comes across with a front kick to Nguyen’s body, Nguyen responds with
several punches to the head and body of Ellis. Ellis again throws a front
kick to Nguyen’s body that backs him across the ring. Ellis, the taller
fighter, uses his kicks to keep Nguyen at bay. Nguyen throws some kicks and
punches of his own but is not as effective with his blows as Ellis. Just
before the bell rings, Nguyen throws a kick at Ellis’ body but receives
several punches to head from Ellis in return. The edge in the round went to
Ellis on all judge’s cards.
Round 2
Both of the fighters are cautious to begin the round. Eventually, Ellis
throws a front kick to the body of Nguyen while Nguyen throws a strong leg
kick back. Both fighters are having a hard time figuring each other out
making it an awkward fight to score. Ellis becomes the aggressor chasing
Nguyen around the ring. Ellis lands a strong three punch combination to
Nguyen’s head right before the bell which possibly helped give him the edge in
the round on all cards.
Round 3
Ellis attacks at the start of the round but Nguyen avoids the attack by
backing away. Ellis throws more punches at Nguyen’s head but his arms appear
too tired to do damage at this time. Nguyen seems to have stronger kicks this
round but not enough of them to take the round on the cards. The judges
scored the fight 30-27 on all cards.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Shawn Ellis
BOUT# 10 Amateur Muay Thai Rules, Middleweight
Adam Brown, 5-4-0, Team

Cabrales tries to kick Brown in the leg but just misses and pays for it when Brown lands his own leg kick followed by several more punches to the head of Cabrales. Cabrales backs up to the ropes and Brown follows him with several more powerful punches to the head. Cabrales sits down on the canvas seconds before the bell rings to end the round. Referee Mike Storm begins to count in the face of Cabrales to let him know he cannot be saved by the bell. Cabrales stands at the count of 9 and is told by the referee that the round is over. The referee then asks Cabrales if he wants to continue the fight or stop. Cabrales responded by saying he wants to stop. At the end of round one, Referee Mike Storm stops the fight.

BOUT# 11 Professional Muay Thai Rules, Cruiserweight
Marcellus Wilks, 0-1-0, Lohan
Fight Club, Des Moines, IA, Trainer: Anthony Bates, Manager: Pete
Peterson
vs
Victor Moreno, 1-0-0, 7 Flags, Clive, IA, Manager: Chad Bergmiere
Round 1
Both of the fighters staying cautiously away from the other at the beginning.
Wilks eventually throws a kick at Moreno but misses. Wilks moves closer and
kicks again but this time his foot is caught by Moreno and he is dumped on the
ground. Wilks stands and again throws a couple of leg kicks at Moreno that
land this time. Wilks then moves in and clinches Moreno. In the clinch,
Wilks gets off a few good knees to Moreno’s legs and body. Moreno turns Wilks
and puts him against the ropes. Wilks is then able to turn Moreno. He steps
back and hits Moreno with a punch that stuns Moreno. Wilks comes forward with
Moreno in the corner and throws a series of punches to the head of Moreno.
Moreno is able to block many of the shots but some do get through forcing
Moreno to push Wilks back so he can escape the corner. Moreno throws punches
at Wilks to try to slow Wilks down. Wilks responds with more punches of his
own. Wilks walks into a wild left hook on his chin which snaps his head back
and staggers him. Moreno follows up with two more powerful unanswered punches
to the head of Wilks. The only thing that appeared to be keeping Wilks up was
the rope that he was holding onto with his right hand. Referee Mike Storm
stepped in to issue a standing 8 count to Wilks before he could take anymore
undefended blows. After the 8 count, the fight continued. Moreno tried to
finish Wilks but Wilks was able to backpedal and survive the attack as the
bell rings to end the round. The edge in the round went to Moreno.
Round 2
Moreno, more confident as the round begins, comes across the ring toward Wilks.
Wilks, head clear now, is able to fight Moreno off. Moreno tries a leg kick
on Wilks that misses and throws him off-balance. Wilks takes advantage and
comes with several strong knees to Moreno’s legs. Moreno clinches to stall
the attack. They break and begin to exchange blows again. Moreno remained
the aggressor but Wilks was able to give as good as he got. A better round
for Wilks but Moreno still had the edge on two of the three judge’s cards.
Round 3
Moreno tries to take control of the round early. Wilks looks tentative.
Moreno lands a strong round kick to Wilks body that knocked Wilks off
balance. Moreno stalks Wilks, Wilks appears to be waiting for Moreno to make
a mistake. Moreno charges Wilks and presses him into the corner. Both
fighters are striking each other wildly with fists, knees and elbows. Moreno
wins the exchange with three strong hooks to Wilks’ body. The crowd is wild,
the fighters are exhausted and the referee has to urge the fighters to
continue fighting. As the bell rings, both are happy to go back to their
corner and await the judge’s decision. Good exchanges by both fighters in the
round but the edge went to Moreno on all judge’s cards possibly due to the
stronger blows in the round. The judges scored the fight 26-30, 27-29 and
26-30.
Winner by Unanimous Decision—Victor Moreno
