RoundKick Rumble XIV
“STAND N BANG”

The Val Air Ballroom in West Des Moines, Iowa was the site on Friday, October 23, 2009 where fighters from Nebraska, South Dakota, Illinois and Iowa came together for Pete and Pam Peterson and RoundKick Gym on a terrific card full of Amateur Men and Women Muay Thai fights.  All bouts sanctioned by the TBA-SA.

There were 15 fights scheduled but Des Moines, IA Junior Katie Agey was unable to fight when her opponent Melissa Regep from Chicago, IL failed to show at the weigh-ins.  It left 14 tremendous fight which included two fine exhibition matches featuring Tyler Kern from Dallas Center, IA going against Grant Sherman from Des Moines, IA in a Junior Boys Atomweight bout and Melina Caniglia from Omaha, NE  against Katy Klinefelter from Iowa City, IA in a Women’s Lightweight bout.

The main event featured Urbandale, IA native Corey McDonald against Dale Stolte, Jr. from Springfield, IL in a fight for the TBA-SA Men’s Amateur United States Light Welterweight Championship.  The results of the night…

Bout #1  Men’s Light Heavyweight

 Able Mahaffey, 3-8-1, 31, 8/8/78, 5’11”, 178.2 lbs, Altoona IA,
RoundKick Gym, Pete Peterson,

vs

Elton Jay Dinsdale, 10-8-1, 33, 11/17/75, 5’10”, 179.4 lbs, Iowa City, IA,
ICOR, Chris Weitz

Round 1          The fighters began the round by exchanging multiple kicks to each others legs and bodies with only an occasional punch thrown by either fighter.  Neither fighter was able to establish the upper hand during the exchanges.  When they got close enough to clinch, things became a little more active.  Mahaffey was able to land a few more knees in the clinch than Dinsdale but Dinsdale was able to turn Mahaffey and throw him down to get out of the clinch.  There was a lot of offense from both fighters but very little defense.  They appeared to want prove to each other who was the stronger of the two.  Mahaffey’s better display of knee strikes in the clinch earned him the edge in the round on two of the judges’ cards.

Round 2          Dinsdale opened with a kick to Mahaffey’s head.  Mahaffey clinched and both fighters exchanged knees to each others’ body.  Dinsdale did a better job at keeping up with Mahaffey in the clinch and was able to turn Mahaffey into the ropes and keep him there with a series of left/right combinations earning him the edge in the round on two judges’ cards.

Round 3          Dinsdale was able to get his range in this round.  He was more effective in the clinch with knees to Mahaffey’s body and was able to turn Mahaffey and move him around on the ropes.  All judges gave Dinsdale the edge in the round.  All judges scored the fight 29-28.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Elton Jay Dinsdale

Bout #2  Men’s Lightweight

Kaleb Lee, 2-1-0, 26, 5/13/83, 5’5”, 130 lbs, Windsor Heights, IA,
            RoundKick Gym, Pete Peterson,

vs

Cameron Villanueva, 1-0-0, 17, 5/14/92, 5’7”, 131.5 lbs, Sioux Falls, SD,
            Next Edge Academy, John Ahrends

Round 1          Lee rushed across the ring at the opening bell and tried to overwhelm Villanueva with punches to the head and kicks to the legs and body.  Villanueva was able to maintain his composure and last out the onslaught.  He threw straight punches to back Lee up and forced Lee to clinch.  Although Lee controlled the head of Villanueva, Villanueva was still able to land punches to Lee’s body and kicks to Lee’s legs.  Villanueva was able to gain the edge in the round on two of the judges’ cards.

Round 2          Lee began the round with punches to Villanueva’s head.  Villanueva clinched with Lee and placed several powerful knees to Lee’s body forcing Lee to back away.  Villanueva came after Lee and landed a front kick to Lee’s body that again backed Lee up.  Right before the bell to end the round, Villanueva landed a round kick across Lee’s belly that put him down.  Lee was unable to answer the 10 count by Referee Mike Storm ending the fight at the end of the round.

Winner by KO—Cameron Villanueva

Bout #3 Men’s Cruiserweight

Riley McIlhon, 1-0-0, 29, 9/10/80, 6’0”, 191.8 lbs, Des Moines, IA,
Des Moines BJJ, Dub Vang,

vs

Shane Cassiday, 0-1-0, 22, 7/29/87, 185.2 lbs, Springfield, IL,
 Lanna Muay Thai, Josh Nordin

Round 1          The round started with both fighters clashing into each other more bumping and pushing than fighting.  As the round progressed, McIlhon started to settle down and pick his shots.  He was able to land punches to the head and body of Cassiday which backed him across the ring.  McIlhon appeared to grow stronger and take control toward the end of the round whereas Cassiday appeared to be winded.  All judges gave the edge in the round to McIlhon.

Round 2          McIlhon continued where he left off in the first round.  He landed a pair of strong front kicks to the belly of Cassiday which put him down for a flash knockdown each time.  McIlhon then proceeded to land shots to Cassiday’s body.  Cassiday dropped his hands to block at which time McIlhon started attacking Cassiday’s head.  Cassiday bent over and turned into the ropes forcing Referee Carl Duncan to step in and issue an 8 count.

Round 3          Cassiday threw several shots to stop McIlhon’s advance as the round began but McIlhon moved threw the blows and landed a body shot followed by a round kick to Cassiday’s head that was partially blocked but still appeared to stun Cassiday.  McIlhon fought the remainder of the round as if he knew he was winning the fight.  He was fighting cautiously so he wouldn’t do anything foolish like get caught with a wild, heavy blow.  He landed a couple more front kicks to an exhausted Cassiday’s body which put him down for another pair of flash knockdowns and then waited for the round to end.  All judges scored the fight 30-26.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Riley McIlhon

 Bout #4  Men’s Super Middleweight

Steve Anderson, 4-1-0, 22, 8/21/87, 5’8”, 168.9 lbs, Ames, IA,
ISU Muay Thai,

 vs

Kuchlong Kuchlong, 3-1-0, 23, 9/7/86, 167.6 lbs, Sioux Falls, SD,
Next Edge Academy, John Ahrends

Round 1          Each fighter fought a cautious round.  One would land a series of power punches and kicks and then a few seconds later the other would answer with the same with neither able to gain an obvious advantage.  Kuchlong was able to land a round kick to the head of Anderson toward the end of the round but he failed to follow up on it.  None-the-less, it may be what gave him the edge in the round on all cards.

Round 2           Anderson tried to take the lead in the round by throwing leg kicks followed by hooks to Kuchlong’s head.  Kuchlong didn’t take long to figure out what Anderson was doing and countered with sharp left jabs to Anderson’s face that forced him to rethink his strategy.  In the interim, Kuchlong began pressing the fight.  Anderson continued with the leg kicks but Kuchlong pressed with the straight rights to Anderson’s head which backed him up and opened him up for kicks and knees to the body from Kuchlong.

Round 3          Kuchlong looked very confident at the start of the round.  He moved toward Anderson with a series of punches and kicks that backed Anderson up.  Kuchlong landed a powerful right leg kick to the upper thigh of Anderson’s left leg that hurt Anderson and put him down for an 8 count from Referee Carl Duncan.  Anderson was obviously favoring the left leg when the fight resumed and Kuchlong went right after it.  He kicked it again and earned a second standing 8 count for Anderson.  Anderson was forced to switch his stance to protect the left leg and it virtually took all of his offense away.  He survived the round and literally limped back to his corner at the end of the round.  All judges scored the fight 30-25.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Kuchlong Kuchlong

 Bout #5  Boy’s Super Middleweight

 Michael Reid, 25-4-0, 15, 2/4/94, 5’8”, 171.7 lbs, Minooka, IL,
Olympic Arena Martial Arts, Pete Farias,

vs

Nick Walenga, 7-3-0, 18, 9/14/91, 6’1”, 170.6 lbs, Springfield, IL,
            Lanna Muay Thai, Josh Nordin

Round 1          Walenga was the taller fighter who enjoyed an obvious reach advantage.  He threw kicks to the legs and body of Reid in an effort to keep Reid away.  One of the leg kicks turned out to be low and stopped Reid which forced Referee Carl Duncan to stop time for Reid to recover and issue Walenga a warning for the low blow.  Once the fight resumed, Reid figured out how to catch Walenga’s kicks and in the process, on several occasions, kicked Walenga’s other leg out from under him.  Although it was only a flash knockdown, it earned points with the judges.  At other times, Reid caught the leg kick and successfully threw spinning backfists at Walenga’s head that won him the round on all cards.

Round 2          Walenga threw a front kick at Reid early in the round and ended up kicking Reid low again which forced Referee Carl Duncan to penalize Walenga a one point deduction in the round.  Reid, the stronger of the two fighters, was able to close the distance between them and in the clinch, was able to knee Walenga in the legs and then repeatedly pick Walenga up and dump him on the ground.  The last throw however, was determined to be a trip rather than a throw which forced the referee to issue a warning to Reid for an illegal trip.  No point was deducted.

Round 3          Walenga appeared to be tired as the round began and Reid appeared determined to impose his will on Walenga.  Reid continued to close the distance and used his strength to tie Walenga up and use knees to Walenga’s legs and body.  Reid’s corner told him throughout the round to forget about throwing Walenga for fear it may be determined to be a trip and cost Reid a point.  Reid was content to work Walenga’s body until time ran out.  All judges scored the fight 30-26.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Michael Reid

Bout #6  Women’s Lightweight

Cynthia Ellsworth, 0-2-0, 40, 8/12/69, 5’0”, 133 lbs, Urbandale, IA,
Des Moines BJJ, Dub Vang,

vs

Kelsey Wisinski, 1-1-0, 19, 5/27/90, 5’5”, 129.8 lbs, Omaha, NE,
Mid-America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone

Round 1          Wisinski appeared to have more of a boxing style where Ellsworth appeared to be more of a brawler/grappler wanting to grab and wrestle in the clinch.  Wisinski was able to keep Ellsworth off with effective jabs and footwork.  She was able to turn Ellsworth into the ropes while in the clinch and then step back into the middle of the ring to resume punching.  All judges gave Wisinski the edge in the round.

Round 2          Wisinski continued to use her punches in this round but added inside and outside leg kicks to her arsenal.  Ellsworth tried to return the leg kicks and was able to land a few but Wisinski did not panic.  She would keep Ellsworth’s attack away with her more effective punches earning her the round on all cards.

Round 3          Ellsworth tried to control the last round by muscling Wisinski and leaning on her up against the ropes.  Wisinski was able to use superior footwork to move out of the corners and off of the ropes.  It was uncertain if Wisinski was ever able to hurt Ellsworth with her strikes but Ellsworth was unable to get close enough to Wisinski to land any significant punishing blows.  All judges scored the fight 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Kelsey Wisinski

  Bout #7   Men’s Light Middleweight

 Coty Zimmerman, 0-1-0, 20, 11/19/88, 5’8”, 161.4 lbs, Carroll, IA,
 RoundKick Gym, Pete Peterson,

vs

Efrain Nevarez, 1-0-0, 21, 1/14/88, 5’7”, 163.4 lbs, Sioux Falls, SD,
Next Edge Academy, John Ahrends

Round 1          Two very evenly matched fighters.  They went through the round exchanging blows.  Nevarez threw several punches at the head of  Zimmerman but Zimmerman was able to block most of the damage and answer back with nearly a half dozen powerful punches to Nevarez’ body throughout the remainder of the round.  The power punches to Nevarez’ body gave Zimmerman the edge on all score cards.

Round 2          Both fighters started the round as head hunters.  They each swung wildly and tried to knock each other out early in the round.  Zimmerman settled down first and as Nevarez attacked, he would use a front kick to Nevarez body to keep him off.  Nevarez remained the aggressor with the punches at the head of Zimmerman.  Zimmerman was forced to clinch and throw a couple of knees to the body of Nevarez to stall the attack but it was too little too late as two judges gave the edge in the round to Nevarez.

Round 3          It appeared that Zimmerman received instructions from his corner between rounds to press the fight and become the aggressor.  It also appeared that he may not have had the energy to do it.  Nevarez continued to through left/right combinations to the head of Zimmerman with more success this round earning him the edge on all cards.  The judges scored the fight 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28 in the only split decision of the night.

Winner by Split Decision—Efrain Nevarez

Bout # 8 Men’s Light Middleweight

 Anthony Yeager, 3-3-0, 19, 11/13/89, 5’10”, 154.7 lbs, Des Moines, IA,
RoundKick Gym, Pete Peterson, vs

Josh Artherton, 1-0-0, 26, 5/10/83, 5’6”, 153.2 lbs, La Vista, NE,
Mid-America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone

Round 1          Yeager, the taller fighter, used his reach advantage to strike Artherton from the outside.  Artherton, the stronger, more compact, was able to absorb many of the blows on his arms and shoulders.  Artherton was able to land some power shots toward the end of the round that backed Yeager up but Yeager responded with strikes of his own that stalled Artherton’s attack.  Artherton may have landed the more powerful shots but two judges gave the edge in the round to Yeager for the superior number of blows landed during the round.

Round 2          Yeager appeared to try to maintain his strategy from the first round by landing a lot of punches to Artherton’s head and body.  Artherton answered back with punches of his own but reinforced it with blistering leg kicks to the front leg of Yeager that made him wince from the pain.  The hand strikes may have been close to even but all judges gave the edge in the round to Artherton for at least six powerful leg kicks that obviously hurt Yeager.

Round 3          Both fighters were obviously tired when the round began.  Yeager attacked with his punches to Artherton’s head but started to back off when Artherton began throwing the punishing leg kicks.  Yeager landed a few more blows than in the previous round but their effectiveness may have been negated by the power of Artherton’s leg kick because two judges gave the edge in the round to Artherton.  All judges scored the fight 29-28.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Josh Artherton

Bout # 9   Men’s Super Middleweight

Mike Snowden, 2-1-0, 23, 6/7/86, 5’11”, 170.6 lbs, Mitchellville, IA,
RoundKick Gym, Able Mahaffey,

vs

Kiel Ricci, 0-1-0, 24, 10/14/85, 5’8”, 176.7 lbs, Sioux Falls, SD,
Next edge Academy, John Ahrends

Kiel Ricci stepped up and took this fight with 2 hours notice when Mike Snowden’s original opponent, Tom Westwater from Chicago, IL, was a “no show” at the weigh-in’s”.

Round 1          Snowden moved toward Ricci and started throwing punches to Ricci’s body.  Ricci tried to answer back with punches of his own but took a blow to the body that put him down and earned him an 8 count from Referee Carl Duncan.  When the fight resumed, Ricci backed away to try and recover from the body shot but Snowden came after him and landed a second body shot that put Ricci down a second time earning him another 8 count.  Snowden finished the round by trying to finish Ricci with punches to the head but ran out of time as the bell rang to end the round.

Round 2          Ricci was able to clinch and tie Snowden up briefly in the round to stall his attack but Snowden figured out how to push off and landed a punch to Ricci’s head that put him down on a knee earning him an 8 count.  Again, Ricci tried to clinch but was unable to maintain it and received another blow to the head which put him down and forced Referee Carl Duncan to step in and stop the fight at 1:45 of the round.

Winner by TKO—Mike Snowden

Bout # 10  Men’s Light Cruiserweight

Jason Minor, 2-3-0, 23, 9/25/86, 6’0”, 189 lbs, Papillion, NE,
Mid-America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone,

vs

Andy Branson, 1-0-0, 24, 6/11/85, 6’0”, 183.5 lbs, Iowa City, IA,
ICOR, Chris Weitz

Round 1          Branson was the aggressor in the round.  He was able to land kicks to the legs and body of Minor putting him down with flash knockdowns several times in the round.  Minor tried to answer back but didn’t appear to bother Branson.  All judges gave the round to Branson.

Round 2          Branson attacked with a ferocity that Minor was unable to match.  Branson kneed Minor to the body and chopped at his legs.  A knee to Minor’s body put him down but he was able to get back up before receiving an 8 count.  Branson attacked again with a leg kick to the back of Minor’s leg that buckled his leg and this time earned Minor an 8 count from Referee Mike Storm.  When Minor got up and the fight resumed, Branson kicked again landing a shot across Minor’s body and putting him down for a second 8 count before the round ended.

Round 3          Minor tried to take some of the sting out of the kicks by trying to catch the leg but ended up taking a punch to his head from Branson in the process.  Branson continued the ruthless body attack chasing Minor into a corner where he couldn’t escape.  Another leg kick put Minor down for an 8 count.  Minor insisted he did not want to stop so the fight continued.  He took one final leg kick before the bell rang and received a last 8 count before the fight ended.  The fight was scored 30-23 by all judges.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Andy Branson

Bout #11   Men’s Middleweight

Andrew Dostal, 5-2-0, 22, 2/22/87, 5’8”, 165.1 lbs, Ames, IA
Des Moines MMA,

vs

Brian Robertson, 8-3-0, 25, 12/8/83, 5’11”, 159.6 lbs, Naperville, IL,
Chicago Muay Thai, Lucas Banach

Round 1           Both fighters were tight and unable to land many power shots at first.  Eventually, they would fall together in a clinch and roll around on the ropes.  In the clinch, Robertson appeared to be in more control and was able to land enough knees to Dostal’s body to earn the edge in the round on all cards.

Round 2           This round was much the same as the previous round.  Dostal was able to land a couple of shots to the head of Robertson but Robertson was again able to control the clinch with knees to the body and pinning Dostal against the ropes earning him the edge again in the round.

Round 3           It was a slightly better round for Dostal; he was able to land a few round kicks before Robertson grabbed him and threw him against the ropes and worked him over in the clinch.  A tough fight to score, two judges still gave the edge to Robertson in the round.  The fight was scored 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Brian Robertson

Bout #12   Men’s Amateur TBA-SA
United States Light Welterweight Title

 Corey McDonald, 6-2-0, 19, 12/25/89, 5’8”, 141.5 lbs, Des Moines, IA,
RoundKick Gym, Pete Peterson,

vs

Dale Stolte, Jr., 8-3-0, 27, 12/21/81, 5’6”, 137.2 lbs, Witt, IL,
Lanna Muay Thai, Josh Nordin

Round 1           McDonald used his reach advantage to throw leg kicks followed by punches to keep Stolte off balance and backing up.  Stolte tried several punches to McDonalds head but McDonald was able to avoid them.  McDonald had the edge in the round on all cards.

Round 2           McDonald, showing confidence from a good first round, continued to be the aggressor and had Stolte backing up during much of the round.  Stolte tried a few shots to catch McDonald off guard but McDonald maintained control and would not let Stolte have the upper hand.  All judges gave the edge in the round to McDonald.

Round 3           A better round for Stolte; he became more the aggressor and landed several punches to McDonald’s face actually giving McDonald a bloody nose.   In the clinch, Stolte was able to work McDonald up against the ropes and land some knees before McDonald could escape.  Two judges gave the edge in the round to Stolte but it was too little too late.  The fight was scored 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision
TBA-SA Amateur United States Light Welterweight Champion
Corey McDonald
